Mission Statement

Picture of Wally at the info fair in 2023.

Wavelength is A hub for student storytelling, digital content creation, and entertainment. We highlight topics that center around all human aspects of student life on campus. Wavelength is committed to providing Western students with a space for vulnerability through an authentic lens of the collective college experience.

Due to the dynamic social climate of WWU’s campus we aim to produce content you actually care about, to showcase and highlight all student stories at Western through digital storytelling. Through videos, podcasts, and articles, Wavelength strives to encompass all of the challenges and triumphs of the student experience.

Wavelength's History

The Wavelength table at the 2023 info fair

Through research at the Western archives with the help from the archivists we were able to learn about our origins and found that we are much older than originally thought. Wavelength comes from the AS review as already known but before the AS review there was a publication titled “The Ascent”. The Ascent was a publication very similar to the AS review, it was first published in the winter of 1981. We at Wavelength think it is important to understand our history and acknowledge the students who worked before us. While Wavelength may look very different from the AS review or the Ascent, we all come from the same ideals and values of representing students and their lives and interests.

Student Submissions

The Link below is the Submission form. Below the link is some general guidlines and information if any other questions arise please reach out via email. (Wavelength@wwu.edu) If you decide to withdraw your submission, please contact us. We look forward to your projects!!

Where to Submit your Projects!

  • Any CURRENT Western student may submit to Wavelength.
  • Submissions must be in the form of a project that is composed of writing, photography, video, audio, or a combination of these.
  • Your Submission can be old but please if you are interested in submitting something older than three months do a look over it and do any edits you feel are necessary.
  • Students may submit only one project per submission period.

*NOTE* We will not publish projects that are excessively long. Written pieces should be a max of eight to ten pages (This applies for Photo projects as well with a max of 15 photos included in them). Video Projects should be a max of twenty-five minutes long. If your project is longer than these restrictions you are welcome to submit it but if it is accepted you will work with a staff member to cut it down.

Once you submit your project to Wavelength here is what will happen on our side. Upon receiving the project Lily (the Wavelength director) will collect all of the submitted projects and screen them for anything considered against Wavelength’s publishing standards. After the initial screening the remaining submissions will be given to the Wavelength staff to deliberate on, and then after deliberation they will be delegated to a staff member, the purpose of the delegation is so that each chosen submission can be collaborated on with with a individual staff member. The submissions will all be anonymous, none of the staff members will know of the creator. The Selections will be made and Selected projects will be contacted.

If your project is selected after the review process, a Wavelength staff member will work with you one-on-one to prepare your piece for publication. All accepted pieces will be published in Spring quarter at dates decided by the Wavelength staff depending upon the publication schedule. Wavelength is published online and we publish “teasers” of them on our social media as well.

Before you submit your project we suggest reviewing our website and looking at previous projects similar to yours (articles, videos, photo projects) purely to understand to gain an idea of the type of projects we publish.

  • Word (Doc) file, Video (MP4) file, a photo (JPeg), and lastly an audio (WAV) file.
  • Please make sure your project has correct elements (Video captions, Photo captions, An Audio Transcript)
  • A title must be included in your submission
  • Please do not include a name on your submission for anonymity purposes.
