“The first time we met we hated each other. No, you didn’t hate me. I hated you.

The second time we met, you didn’t even remember me. I did too. I remembered you.

The third time we met, we became friends. We were friends for a long time, and then we weren’t…” –

When Harry Met Sally (1989)

Every year as February comes around, whether or not you are single, there is a feeling of love buzzing in the air. Hearts flutter so loud you can practically hear them while walking through Red Square. Seemingly everyone is in a couple, and any of your friends in entanglements of some form seem to always be busy; they carry out ordinary daily tasks as a couple, tasks that aren’t typically considered to warrant two people, like grocery shopping or the dishes. As “the single friend,” you are known for having a lot of freedom with your time. When your friends ask about your love life, you generally answer with a long story about how you had been talking to someone, but something happened, and now you’re back to where you started. In response, your friends probably say something along the lines of “Aww, that sucks. They just weren’t ready for someone like you! When it’s meant to be, you’ll know.” This can become tiring; it might even make you want to hide yourself away from the world for the winter. Almost every year, around November, I find myself tired, and in the disposition of wanting to hide myself from the world. For me, this means rewatching my favorite rom-coms. There are several that I am always excited to return to, like About Time (2013), Notting Hill (1999), and When Harry Met Sally (1989). Each movie is suited for different feelings and moments, but I’ve found these movies to be a source of comfort, filled with heartwarming moments that you can’t help but smile at. When Harry Met Sally, an intricate story about two friends, Harry (played by Billy Crystal) and Sally (played by Meg Ryan) falling in love, has always been particularly special to me. I was a young teen when my mom showed it to me, and, as a stubborn yet sensitive young woman, I felt that I related a lot to Sally. On New Year’s Eve this year, as 2024 was becoming 2025, my parents and I rewatched When Harry Met Sally. Just as the clock on my phone struck midnight, and the crowd on-screen finished counting down the seconds to the new year, I watched my parents doze off as Harry told Sally all the things he loves about her, and the two fell in love. As I watched, I wondered if 2025 was the year that I would find love like my parents’, like my friends in long-term relationships’, like Harry and Sally’s. At the end of the movie, the couple is interviewed about their relationship, how they met and got together, and I started to think about the couples around me, the people I walk next to everyday, who have their own unique story of how they met and got together. So, the Wavelength staff set out to document the love stories that have, at some time, taken place on Western’s campus, with the intention of providing some hope and heartwarming promise for how your story could unfold.

Happy Valentines Day!
